'A Note From Our President' Section

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is getting a chance to enjoy the summer weather. I can’t believe it’s August already!!

The Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a blood drive along with the Middle Country Public Library, and I wanted to thank every one of you that helped by displaying posters in your workplace and spreading the word. I especially wanted to thank those of you that came out and gave blood. As a general rule, the regional supply runs low in the summer months, and every person that donated is helping to save a life. The Chamber is also grateful to Sandy Feinberg and the staff of the library (especially Elizabeth Malafi) for putting this all together.

Those of us that missed the meeting in July really missed something worthwhile. The BBQ King did the on-site cooking, and the Member of the Month, Charles Eggleton of the Delphi Group did a wonderful job of representing his company and its services. The main speaker for the meeting, Gloria Glowacki of the NYS Small Business Development Center, was very effective and really made our members aware of the importance of developing and delivering an “elevator speech”. Some of our members are still talking about her presentation!

Let me take just a minute and tell you that the members of the board continue to be very busy serving the needs of the Chamber in several areas. We’ve created several committees to help meet your needs, and we are setting up an easy way for you to provide feedback to the committee members through the website. We’ll have more information on this at our next meeting.

Speaking of the next meeting, it will be August 21st at the Middle Country Public Library. The catering will be handled by JeJoJo’s Bagels, who has excellent food. Please RSVP to Doreen Newman and let her know if you will be able to attend. Doreen’s email address is Doreen@MiddleCountryChamber.com. The Member of the month is Richard Van Allen of Star Publishing, and the guest speaker will be Ron Cusano, of Business Networking, Inc. It should be very, very interesting, and a lot of fun!! I’m looking forward to it. As always, bring a new member and receive a $25.00 credit toward next year's membership dues.

Also, remember that we select one business each month to be the Chamber Member of the Month. That member gets to present their company at the Chamber meetings, and also receives additional coverage in the newsletter. If you are interested in taking advantage of this free service, please give Doreen or me your business card and let us know of your interest.

As always, please feel free to contact me or any board member with any suggestions or ideas that you may have for future meetings or events. If there is a speaker that you think should address the Chamber at one of our meetings, please share that as well.

There are many more updates that we will share with you in upcoming emails and, of course, at the meetings. I hope to see you there!

Regards,

Mike Anderson

Turn Cold Leads Into New Sales This Summer

By Janet Attard

You get a request for product literature or information about your business and you send it within a day or so of getting the request. A week or two goes by and the prospect hasn't called or placed an order. What do you do next?

If you are like many small businesses the answer is "nothing" and that is a big mistake.

Customers who request product literature, information, or samples often have a genuine interest in making a purchase, but they may not need to purchase that item immediately. Thus, they look over what you send and then put it aside, planning to follow up at some point in the future.

Then a couple of months later their priorities shift. Suddenly, the product they were thinking about purchasing "sometime" becomes the product or service they need now. By this time, however, that first piece of literature or sample you sent may be filed, misfiled, buried on the bottom of a stack of non-urgent things to do, or even tossed out during an office cleanup campaign.

If that has happened, who is likely to get the sale? Assuming there are several competitors all selling very similar products or services at very similar prices, the vendor whose name is most familiar because they have made the most recent and/or frequent contacts with the prospect is likely to get the order.

Position your company to win those delayed sales by following up regularly for at least six months on all qualified sales leads. Make your initial follow-ups once every other week for the first six weeks if the prospect seems genuinely interested. After that, follow up about once a month. Your follow-ups don't have to be elaborate or costly. A telephone call or follow up letter asking if you can provide additional information, reminders to check your web site for new information, and notices of special offers all are good ways to keep in touch and keep your name and product fresh in their mind.
