Hello Everyone,
I generally prefer to look forward and
talk about upcoming events, but I would be remiss if I did not
mention a few things that have occurred since our last meeting.
First, I want to congratulate Dennis
Sullivan of the VFW Post 4927. He has been honored by his peers,
and has been made the new Commander of the Post. This really is
a great honor and the Chamber salutes him for all that he has
accomplished. Dennis works as hard as anyone that I know, he is
a very active member of the Chamber, and there is nobody more
deserving of this recognition than him.
I also wanted to mention that we had a
great time at the VFW Memorial Day Parade! We have a beautiful
new banner, we hired the pink monkey, and we gave out bags and
bags of candy to all of the children (and some of the adults)
along the parade route. Some of the Chamber members walked and
gave out fliers for their business. It is a really great way to
see the residents and promote your business, while at the same
time paying homage to the veterans and remembering the reason we
have a Memorial Day Parade in the first place. We will
participate in this parade every year, so please put it on your
calendar and plan to join us next May.
As a reminder, our meeting in June is
an evening networking event. Every 3rd month we move the meeting
to the evening to accommodate those members that can’t always
get away for our regular afternoon ‘lunch’ meetings. The
networking meetings have no formal presenters or speakers, and
are a lot of fun. The new members (and we have several) will
have an opportunity to introduce themselves to the rest of the
group. At our last networking meeting we had new members bring
samples of their products (very tasty!), and they were a big
hit.
We are planning a very special meeting
for July. Sandy Feinberg of the Middle Country Public Library
has come up with some great ideas, and it will be another
outstanding meeting. We can talk about that more at June’s
meeting. The Chamber traditionally takes off one month in the
summer, so we will not have a meeting in August. The board of
the Chamber meets the first Friday of every month, and will
continue to do so to make sure we address the needs of your
business as well as those of the community. If you have ideas or
suggestions on things you would like the board to discuss and
consider, please contact any board member and we will make sure
it is addressed at the next board meeting. All board members and
their contact information are listed on our website.
The Gala Event committee has been
working hard to make a very special 5th Anniversary event at the
end of September. They are working with several organizations to
nail down the location, and once that is finalized you will all
receive additional information concerning opportunities that you
will have to make this event special for you and your company.
There are many more items of news; big
things are happening around town! You will have to come to the
meeting to get the updates! I hope to see you then.
Regards,

Federal Minimum Wage Increase Signed into Law
On May 25th, President Bush signed into
law House Resolution 2206, which includes the “Fair Minimum Wage
Act of 2007.” The Act provides for a three-step increase in the
federal minimum wage, beginning with an initial increase from
the current $5.15 per hour to $5.85 per hour effective July 24,
2007. The federal minimum wage will then increase again from
$5.85 to $6.55 on July 24, 2008 and $7.25 per hour two years
after the first increase, which will be July 24, 2009.
Although the New York State minimum
wage is currently higher than the new federal minimum wage,
employers are required to display the Federal Minimum Wage law
poster as well as other federal labor postings in their
workplace. The content of the new minimum wage poster was not
yet available from the federal government as of the end of May.

How to Cut the Cost of Mailings
By Janet Attard
If you do a lot of mailing, chances are you can
reduce the cost of sending mail to customers and prospects without
reducing the number of times you communicate with them.
Here are 9 practical ways to reduce your
mailing costs:
- Get a scale and postage meter. Weigh each
piece of mail and use the postage meter to print up the exact amount
of postage for each piece you mail.
- If you're mailing a document that weighs
less than an ounce, fold it to fit in a standard business size
envelope instead of mailing them flat. Postage for a 9 x 12 envelope
weighing 1 ounce is 80 cents.
- Use standard sized envelopes and
postcards. You'll be charged extra postage for odd-sizes.
- If your designer suggests very heavy stock
for a mailing, get a sample of the paper and envelope you'd mail and
weigh it and find out what it will cost to mail the piece. If the
weight of the document increases postage, ask the designer to choose
a lighter-weight alternative.
- Send a postcard instead of a letter. You
can send a standard size postcard first class for only 26 cents - a
savings of 15 cents off a first class letter.
- If you regularly mail quantities of
letters, ask the Post Office for information about bulk mail
permits.
- Clean you house mailing lists to eliminate
bad addresses and duplicates. When you mail to a bad address you
lose the cost of the postage and the cost of the mailing piece.
- If you want to make an impact, but don't
absolutely have to have a document delivered overnight, consider
Priority mail.
- Save on boxes and mailing envelopes. If
you plan to ship an item by priority mail, use the boxes and mailing
envelopes provided by the Post Office and other shippers. They're
sturdy and free. Depending on the shipping location, Priority Mail
may only cost a few pennies more than regular parcel rates, too.
