From the outside, Theresa Marcel’s Kitchen and Baths on Middle Country Road in Centereach looks like a quaint country store. Once inside, you’ll be amazed to find a full showroom of cabinetry and countertops on display. “Our customers are usually surprised at how much there is too choose from here,” said owner Ron Harrington. With the most modern technology at their fingertips and knowledge of the latest trends, the folks at Theresa Marcel’s specialize in start to finish kitchen or bathroom remodeling including design, custom cabinetry and installation.

As a teenager in Selden, Ron learned his trade at a local cabinet shop. In 1973, he became partners with the owner and created a new company. Using a combination of his partner’s son’s name “Marcel” and his wife’s name “Theresa,” Theresa Marcel’s Kitchen and Bathroom was born. “We started out working from my basement, building all our own cabinets and working mostly on new construction,” Ron remembers. “After we moved to Centereach, the industry changed, new construction slowed down and we began working with homeowners on updating and renovating,” he added. Around the same time, Ron and his wife became full owners of the company and realized it was too costly to do all the cabinetmaking work on site; so Ron went through a long process of finding a manufacturer that made an excellent product at reasonable prices. Holiday Kitchen in Wisconsin fit the bill. Today, Ron is proud to offer the Holiday line as well as the Aristokraft line of cabinetry to his customers.

Today, with a workshop still on site, fabrication of Mica countertops are done in-house. By far the most popular countertops are quartz and granite which are impervious to just about everything. “Stone countertops are extremely durable and are chosen by 4 out of 5 of our customers,” Ron said. Theresa Marcel’s also offers flooring through a wholesale floor covering company named ProSource, and installation of tile, laminate and real wood floors.

“These days the value of your home is closely tied to the value of your kitchen,” Ron explains. Although, investing in the heart of your home, as the kitchen is so often referred to, can bring a return when the house is sold, Ron also emphases that a decent kitchen remodeling job does not have to break the bank and can be had for less than $10,000. “We really do offer a quality kitchen to fit any budget,” Ron states. “Our workmen can go from completely renovate a space including knocking down walls, installing flooring, windows and doors, installing premium cabinetry and countertops or we will help you choose designs and styles to fit your budget, order and even deliver materials for do-it-yourselfers.”

Long time residents of the area, Ron and his wife Theresa both grew up in Selden and are graduates of Newfield High School. They presently reside in Lake Grove where they raised their three children and where their first granddaughter visits often.

To find out more information about Theresa Marcel’s Kitchen and Baths visit their showroom at 1456 Middle Country Road or on the web at www.theresamarcels.com or call 631-698-8111.

Chamber Announces New President

The Middle Country Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce Mike Anderson as its new President. Mike is the President of American Professional Services, Inc., a computer network design, security and training company and has been a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors since the Chamber’s inception in 2002. Mike has worked with technology for more than 20 years and holds many of the highest certifications in the industry. He is currently a member of the Middle Country Central School District’s Board of Education and Chairs the Middle Country Coalition for Smart Growth. “I think it is important to share in the responsibility of our community,” said Mike. “Anything we can do to help the youth, the families, and the businesses in our community is a step in the right direction.”

Mike, his wife Joanne and their two children Billy and Kristyn have been Centereach residents for 14 years.

A Parting Letter from Our Former President Kevin McCormack

About five years ago, I attended a meeting in place of a colleague who was unable to be present at a Centereach Civic meeting to discuss the formation of a new Chamber of Commerce. The rest, they say, is history…

In the weeks following that meeting, a dedicated group of local business leaders decided to establish the Centereach Chamber of Commerce. I was elected the first president soon after – I think because I was the one who scheduled all the meetings!

We started out small --an initial group of about 10-15 members with a vision. Because of their leadership abilities, it was clear though, that a few of that original group would form the first Board of Directors. Many of them are still on the board today: Sandy Feinberg, Connie Lynch, Dean Mercado, Jim McCann and Mike Anderson. They deserve much of the credit for the success of the chamber.

Over the next few years we began to outgrow our various meeting places such as banks, bars and restaurants. Yes, we used to have “Breakfast Meetings” at a bar! We eventually found our permanent home at the Middle Country Public Library, where the majority of our Luncheon Meetings are held today. We also began attracting businesses from Selden and Lake Grove, which meant we also, outgrew our name. The Centereach Chamber of Commerce became the Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce -- today with members not only from Centereach, Selden and Lake Grove, but 22 other surrounding communities. Good thing we added “Greater” to our name.

Looking back over the last, almost five years, I have nothing but fond, happy and proud memories. My decision to step down as president to accept the position of Executive Director of the Middle Country Coalition for Smart Growth was not an easy one – but I knew it was the right one. When Mike Anderson stepped up to accept the presidency, it made my decision easier, as I know he will be able to take the chamber to the next level.

To all of you that have been part of the chamber, I say thanks for making it easy. Without you, there would really be no chamber. I’ll still be at every meeting (almost every meeting), so I will still get to eat lunch with my friends and colleagues. Actually, I rarely got to eat lunch with my friends and colleagues, so this is looking pretty good.

Seriously, though, I wish Mike and the Board the best of luck in the future, and I thank them for all they have done for me. I wish all of you the best of luck and success in your businesses.

Thanks for everything,

Kevin

Create Print Ads That Work! Six Design Tips for Busy Business Owners

by Richard Van Allen

In a recent Middle Country Chamber of Commerce newsletter article, my friend and OnlineMarketingMuscle principal Dean Mercado made a strong case for all business owners to have an Internet presence. While the promise of the Web is undeniable, Chamber members shouldn’t overlook the value of display ads placed in local community newspapers and shopper publications.

Like the Internet, these periodicals offer a low-cost means to advertise a firm’s products or services; access to the ads and the information seen on their pages is immediate, and because they’re printed, and can be saved or posted on a refrigerator door, these ads are available for use 24/7. Best of all, unlike the Internet, the readers of community newspapers and shopper publications are assured that the sales messages they see have been placed by the owners of nearby stores and restaurants.

While relevant, community papers of all kinds face pressure from a variety of competitors. Editors are challenged each week to attract readers and draw them inside their publication with a useful mix of news stories, service columns, event announcements, and more.

Once an individual has opened their issue, it’s up to the advertisers to grab the attention of the person turning the pages. Research by the Newspaper Advertising Bureau (NAB) indicates that each page of a paper receives about ten seconds of attention from the typical reader.

Here are six ways to create better display ads:

  1. Attract the reader’s attention with a powerful, relevant visual and present the selling proposition in a logical sequence.
  2. Devote as much as 25 percent of your ad’s space to the headline. Use it to promote something new, such as a grand opening, or a purchase benefit, like “FREE” or “25% OFF.”
  3. Reward the reader with as generous an offer as possible, “Save $5 on Any $25 Order.” Use coupons that have an expiration date with a short time frame to spur action.
  4. Keep your ad copy to a minimum and use short sentences. Employ a typeface, or a couple of fonts at most, that are simple and easy to read.
  5. Promote the service or product you offer, not the source.
  6. Be sure to include your firm’s logo, phone number, e-mail and physical address, as well as the Web site URL (if there is one) and hours of operation, but make all of these elements less prominent than the headline or the visual.

If you allow sufficient time to create your display ad, treat your community newspaper account executive as a partner in the design process, and employ a few of the tips I’ve suggested, you’ll be rewarded with print ads that work.

Good luck and good selling!
